Agartala, Sep 11 (TIWN): Though the state government imposed a total ban on the manufacture, import, storage and sale of plastic bags in view of its harmful affect on the environment, thin plastic bags are yet in use throughout the state due to some mysterious reasons.

In recent times, the Ambassa Municipal Council and Department of Science, Technology and Environment, Dhalai District conducted raid in a number of shops at Ambassa and recovered huge quantity ban carry bags. The officials of District Science, Technology and Environment Department interacted with the traders. Questions were raised on behalf of the traders, why the Environment Department does not take any action against the companies that supplies plastic packed commodities?

According to the traders, salt, oil, biscuit, chocolate, soap and a large portion of food items are wrapped in plastic bags. The Department of Environment should clarify the issue. On the contrary, the owners of cloth stores said that textile companies and factories supply textile goods in plastic bags. The Department of Environment should clarify the matter.

A textile trader Ranjit Roy said, “We always sell cloth in jute bags. But, the expensive dress materials are being supplied in plastic bags from Kolkata, Mumbai, Punjab and other states. Hence, we have nothing to do in this regard. The officials of Science and Environment Department have to say which plastic bags should be banned and which one should be used, otherwise we and the purchasers as well have to face problems”.

The decision to ban plastic bags was made under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and the Plastics Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011. The state government had originally imposed the ban on plastic bags from January, but challenging the state government's decision, plastic bags are yet in use.
