AGARTALA, September 9 (TIWN): TIWN has received a string of threats from various quarters after it published investigative news items on Education Department Cheque Forgery and how government funds were misused to purchase books written by CM and former CS.
Many believed to be close to both of them have asked TIWN to stop 'covering Tripura politics' to 'closing down' the webmedia itself.
Now TIWN local staff are receiving threats over telephone, with unidentified callers asking them to not work for TIWN.
'You guys , stay safe, and dont work for TIWN." callers told TIWN staffers.
TIWN office in Banamalipur is under severe pressure as staffers are unwilling to risk their life and limb after the threat calls.
TIWN news operations have suffered because though journalists for the group are willing to take the risk, the office cannot be run without the support.
TIWN Managing Director says he is willing to brave all threats and continue the website's news and current affairs operation.
"Our office may not open temporarily or may suffer but we are a news media wth staff presense in Calcutta,Hyderabad and USA apart from Agartala and our boys will file from whereever they are and our sources will keep us informed . This is most brazen attack on the freedom of press in Tripura in recent years, but we take the challenge, our mission of delivering all current news based on facts, truth and operating as a Neutral and Not-for-profit media will continue " Sarker said.
He said he will soon inform national and global media watchdog bodies like the Washington based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) ,Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ), the Editors Guild and the Paris based Reporters San Frontiers (RSF).
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry in Delhi is also been informed.
