KAILASHAHAR / AGARTALA, June 15 (TIWN): Six columns of Assam Rifles under HQ 21 Sector Assam Rifles are spearheading flood relief and rescue operations in the inundated areas of Fatikroy, Kumarghat & Kailashahar of Unakoti District along with NDRF & local administration. Large areas of Kailashahar Sub-Division have been inundated due to flash floods in Manu River, which has breached its banks near Kailashahar. Heavy rains in the area have further caused inundation of the low lying areas and landslides have blocked communications.

Around 1200 individuals have been evacuated from inundated areas to nearest relief camps by Assam Rifles columns. Four BOUTs from Army Engineers have also been released & three helicopters from Indian Airforce have reached Radhanagar for assisting in relief operations. More than 21,000 people have been sheltered in 97 relief camps of Unakoti District. Water, food and medical facilities have been extended to the people in relief camps by Assam Rifles.

Other agencies like NDRF & local administration are assisting in providing relief to the affected population in terms of search & rescue. Large number of NDRF teams have arrived since 13 June 18 at Agartala to join in the relief operations. Local resources and boats from fishermen have also been pooled in for rescue operations. The genuine efforts of Assam Rifles to extend help during disastrous situation were appreciated by all.
