State readies team to screen ebola suspects at Agartala Airport

Agartala, September 3 (TIWN): The state government is taking a set of preventive and precautionary steps against any possible outbreak of ebola virus in the state.

Speaking in the state legislative assembly on the last day of the monsoon session today, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Badal Choudhury said that standard precautionary instructions were issued to all jails and correctional homes. Guidelines for adopting preventive measures were sent, he added.

The minister further informed that the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) was asked to operate a separate Isolation Ward to treat ebola patients if necessary.

The medical college authorities were further asked a prepare special team of virology and infectious disease experts to screen suspects travelling by air from countries affected by the disease at the Agartala Airport on need basis.

Medical experts at the Department of Microbiology in the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) were asked to make necessary arrangements to collect blood samples from ebola suspects identified anywhere in the state and send them for tests at the National Institute of Virology in Pune.

All steps are being taken; there is no report to be alarmed of as yet, the minister stated.

The Health Department earlier issued a standard precautionary guideline to all eight district authorities. The guidelines mandated surveillance, emergency diagnosis and identification of ebola till the grass root level.

The first notification on the issue was made on June 05 after the initial outbreak of ebola was reported from West Africa. The authorities repeated a similar notification on August 12.

The latest guideline contained detailed description of symptoms and preliminary treatment of ebola.
