AGARTALA, April 15 (TIWN): The non-operational Belonia-Feni railway line to be restored to ease the business and communication.

The railway line was 27 km long and had eight operational stations earlier, an official said.

The rail lines were snapped after the partition of the country in 1947 and wars in 1965 and 1971

The snapped railway line between northeast Indian state of Tripura and Bangladesh’s Feni district, which was functional between 1929 and 1997, is being contemplated to be resumed by the Indian government and the country’s Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

The railway line was 27 km long and had eight operational stations – Bondhuar-Daulatpur, Notun Munshighat, Porshuram, Pirbox, Anandapur, Fulgazi, Chittulia and Belonia – between Belonia, a municipal town of Tripura, and Feni.

NFR’s Senior Public Relations Officer Md MMY Alam said: “The Indian government is enthusiastic about the revival of the snapped Belonia-Feni railway line. We have given our approval as well. However, Bangladesh is yet to permit us to start the project.”

Moti Lal Debnath, president of Tripura Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: “There is a land customs office at Belonia, through which cement is imported to Tripura from Bangladesh. However, if the railway line between Belonia and Feni is restored, it would be easier to import huge amount of cement and less expensive for both India and Bangladesh.”
