AGARTALA, September 2 (TIWN): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday demanded strict action on the CPI (M) leaders involved in torture on a pregnant lady at Dimatali area that led to her miscarriage on August 19. Tripura Mahila Morcha secretary Rupa Roy today welcomed the move of the state police to arrest four leaders of the All India Democratic Womens’ Association (AIDWA) known to be involved with the crime and demanded exemplary punishment for them.Roy said that cadres of the ruling CPI (M) have gone out of control in the last two decades of left rule. “We have noticed that male and female party cadres have equally become outrageous in their activities.

This is a sign of danger for the state’s population and the democratic spirit of the nation”, she said.

A delegation of the Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress earlier visited Dimatali and demanded strict action against all involved in the crime. The Congress alleged that while four women leaders were arrested by the police, the sleuths have deliberately left senior leaders of the party who were involved in the incident.

The CPI (M) party has already washed hands off the issue by stating that the party was running a witch-hunt to identify party members involved in the criminal incident.

MLA Belonia divisional committee secretary Basudeb Majumder publicly condemned the incident in a press conference on Sunday and said that the party would hunt down all members or leaders involved in the issue. “The issue came to our view much later. We can’t tolerate such incidents, even more in CPI (M) party offices. We are very clear about our strategy that these incidents wouldn’t be tolerated”, Majumder had said.

Local sources at Belonai said that Hirulal, an infamous alcoholic of the area, has been assaulting with intentions to molest or defile women for years. Hiru reportedly attacked one Babi Khatun and her mother upon her protest against a similar assault on the day.

After the duo sought redressal of their grievance from gram panchayat pradhan Hiru Das, the latter called a kangaroo court in the local CPI (M) party office. Babi Khatun was reported to have been publicly tortured, kicked in the abdomen which led to her miscarriage.
