MATABARI, UDAIPUR, August 27 (TIWN): Due to total negligence from the Fishery Department, the department in charge of taking care of Kalyan Sagar, 19 fishes died in Kalyan Sagar on Tuesday and if the water condition does not improve, more marine animals are likely to succumb. Since late night on Monday fishes were dying and on Tuesday morning when morning walkers visited Matabari as usual they found some fishes floating on the surface water of the Kalyan Sagar already dead. Interestingly, though the news spread within a few minutes none of the officials of the Fishery Department thought it necessary to visit the Matabari.

Manager of Matabari Temple told the press that no experts were seen to come here. SDM Udaipur Ajit Debnath told TIWN over phone, "As soon as I got the information I immediately told the Deputy Director of Fishery Department. But he is outside he didn't come up. However, till afternoon no experts came. After 5 pm all the dead fishes were buried."He said that over all 19 fishes died. Reacting to the reason behind this SDM said, "Though the actual reason can be known only after research.

But there is no such laboratory in our state to examine the quality of water. However, as far as I know the water of Kalyan Sugar is now badly polluted. The slush in the depth of water has already rotten. And this may be reason behind the deaths." DSM also told TIWN over phone, "I have already instructed to pour Potassium and other necessary chemicals in Kalyan Sagar and there is no shortage of fund for this. From Wednesday morning workers will begin their work.

Administration will do everything to bring the pollution level down." Meanwhile the recent death as of fishes will won't affect the rare species N-Nigricans turtles of Kalyan Sagar , said Environmentalist Rupali Ghosh, who was one of the members who recently visited Matabari along with five foreign experts.

Rupali Ghosh, who is now in Europe to attend a seminer , told TIWN over phone, " There is no reason for concern about the N-Nigricans turtles. Actually the fishes died due to pollution but that level of pollution won't affect the turtles. However, at night a number of pollutants tend to gather around the artificial beach (on East bank of Kalyan Sugar) and during this time the turtles visit the beach as they prefer silence.

Administration must look after that these trashes are removed from the water in between 6pm to 10pm so that the water does not get oily. If we want to save the turtles we have to shift the fishes in nearby ponds as the water does not fit for their survival; rather they will kill the little turtles."
