AGARTALA, Jan 30 (TIWN): Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy on Tuesday paid a rich tribute to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhighat on the occasion of his death anniversary.
Leaders from various political parties and other dignitaries also paid floral tributes to the father of the nation in the state.
The day is also observed as Martyrs` Day. On this day in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated at a prayer meeting.
Mahatma Gandhi, whose life was an inspiration not only to those struggling for India's freedom but continues to inspire all people of conscience the world over that are struggling for freedom, social justice and genuine democracy, was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, on the steps of a building where a prayer meeting was going to take place.
Although India had won its independence from the British on August 15, 1947, Gandhiji continued his struggle for social justice and against sectarian hate that threatened the social fabric of the nation, until the last breath of his life.
It is disheartening to note that while other occasions in India are celebrated with much vigor, Mahatma Gandhi death, which was for the nation and social justice, hardly finds any attention.
