New Delhi, Dec 15 (TIWN) Group Captain Varun Singh, who was injured in a military chopper crash on December 8, succumbed to his injuries. He was the lone survivor of the chopper crash in which Chief of Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 other armed personnel were killed in Coonoor in Tamil Nadu.
Taking to the Twitter, Indian Air Force wrote, “IAF is deeply saddened to inform the passing away of braveheart Group Captain Varun Singh, who succumbed this morning to the injuries sustained in the helicopter accident on 08 Dec 21. IAF offers sincere condolences and stands firmly with the bereaved family.” The Shaurya Chakra Awardee was being treated at the Bengaluru Command Hospital. Following the sad demise of the military official, President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to their social media handles and expressed condolences. “Sad to learn that Group Captain Varun Singh breathed his last after putting up a valiant fight for life. Though badly injured in the chopper crash, he displayed the soldierly spirit of valour and indomitable courage. The nation is grateful to him. My condolences to his family,” President Ram Nath Kovind said. Remembering the brave soldier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Group Captain Varun Singh served the nation with pride, valour and utmost professionalism. I am extremely anguished by his passing away. His rich service to the nation will never be forgotten. Condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti.” Earlier on December 8, an IAF Mi 17 V5 helicopter with a crew of 4 members carrying the CDS and 9 other passengers met with a tragic accident near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. The tragic accident killed 13 people including India’s first Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat.
