JAKARTA, September 14, 2026: A major rescue operation is underway in Indonesia after the passenger ferry Virgo Transport 8 capsized in the Java Sea during severe weather, leaving at least six people dead and 129 others missing.

The vessel was carrying 243 people, including 213 passengers and 30 crew members, when it encountered rough weather while travelling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan. The ferry reportedly lost contact early Sunday after encountering strong waves.

Indonesian authorities have intensified search-and-rescue operations, deploying more than 600 personnel, along with ships and aircraft. Officials said 108 people have so far been rescued, while the search continues for those still missing.

According to rescue officials, strong waves struck the vessel's starboard side, causing it to tilt before eventually capsizing. Rough sea conditions have made the operation difficult, with rescuers working against challenging weather.

The ferry disaster has triggered concern among families waiting for information about their loved ones. Rescue agencies, the Indonesian Navy and other maritime authorities are coordinating the operation.
