SONAMURA, December 24 (TIWN): In another successful and perfectly coordinated operation headed by the SDM Sonamura, Subhasis Das, a joint team of Sonamura Sub-Divisional Administration, BSF 29 Battalion, local Police Administration and Excise officials has today destroyed two huge plantations of Indian hemp, commonly known as Ganja, which have an estimated financial value of Rs.6.25 crore.

The operation was carried out between 2.00 pm and 4.30 pm at Barmura area of Uttar Paharpur Gaon Panchayat under Kathalia R D Block, where the plantations were raised over about 20 acre area. During the operation, total of 25,000 ganja plants were cut down. Although there was some initial resistance to the operation orchestrated by the local ganja cultivators, and their abettors, it soon fizzled out in the face of the resolute attitude of the raid-team and deft handling of the situation by the team’s leadership.

It may be recalled that this was the second time that such destruction operation has been carried out in the Barmura area. With today’s operation, entire Barmura area has been cleansed of the left-over plantations from the first operation. The raid-team comprised of total of 43 members, with there being 7 members from the Sub-Divisional Administration, 9 of local Police Administration and 27 of Kulubari and Dhanpur BOPs under 29 Battalion BSF.

Although there has been a brief lull in the operations against illegal ganja plantations following the SDM Sonamura going on a spell of leave, however with his resumption of charge, the ongoing drive against the organized ganja cultivations and smuggling operatives in the Sub-Division has regained momentum.

It may be mentioned that yesterday immediately after joining back to his duties, a raid was conducted under the joint leadership of SDM Sonamura, Subhasis Das, and Asst. Commandant of BSF 29 Battalion, Rakesh Mishra in Srimantapur area under Sonamura Police Station, from where huge quantum of illegally stocked foodstuff worth Rs.2.12 lakh was recovered. The seized foodstuff was clandestinely brought into the area with intent to smuggle them out across the porous international border.

In today’s operation, the BSF contingent was headed by Rakesh Mishra and Dinesh Singh, Coy Commanders of Kulubari BOP and Dhanpur BOP respectively, the Police team was headed by Ashok Sinha, SDPO Sonamura, while the Excise side was represented by Gopal Das, Sr. Excise Inspector, Sonamura.

The SDM Sonamura has asserted that that will not be any let up in the efforts of the administration against the wrongdoers who have undermined the socio-cultural environment in the Sub-Division, giving rise to a virtual mafia-culture.
