Malaria under control in Tripura, says Health and Family Welfare Secretary

AGARTALA, July 29 (TIWN): The malaria outbreak that ravaged distant tribal hamlets of Tripura for the past two months was largely contained, Health and Family Welfare secretary M Nagaraju said here today. Speaking to TIWN at the civil secretariat, Health Secretary Nagaraju said no fresh report of death from malaria came from anywhere in the state during the last five days. The situation, which went out of control in May and June, considerably improved with tireless efforts of medical teams with the help of NGOs, volunteers and defense personnel, the official stated.

Asked about steps taken from the government to contain the malaria outbreak, Health secretary M Nagaraju said that 5418 medical camps were organized since June 13 as part of the government’s response to check the outbreak.

Regular medical support, all district administration has taken the initiative to create awareness amongst tribal dwellers to make them recognize features of the disease and its remedies, he said. Speaking about reasons behind the deaths due to malaria, the official said that late start of treatment caused more deaths as MPW, ASHA workers and Anganwadi workers and helpers did not turn up on their own to the health centres and hospitals.

A press communiqué stated later today 45 medical camps were set up, where malaria germs was found among 388 patients out of 1639 fever patients.  Official death toll due to malaria in Tripura stands at 65, unofficially it crossed a hundred. Nearly 2 laths 38 thousand complained of fever and 41,383 of them were tested positive for malaria (PF), officials confirmed.

Dhalai district as a whole and Gandacherra and Longtarai Valley in particular were always prone to vector born diseases. The outbreak spread across four more districts this year.
