Repoll ends with 91.3 percent turnout, tight security mulled for counting

Agartala, July 17 (TIWN): Repoll of six seats including one panchayat samity and one zilla parishad seat was conducted with an average of 91.30 percent turnout, State Election Commission secretary Tamal Majumder said here today.

Speaking to reporters at the Commission state headquarters in Agartala, Majumder today said that preliminary reports suggested 94.1 percent turnout in Bhatilarma gram panchayat in Bishalgarh block, 92 percent turnout in Kurti gram panchayat of Kadamtala block and 87.8 percent turnout in repoll at Dakshin Panisagar gram panchayat in Panisagar block.
Repoll ended in all three locations save Panisagar block where 59 voters were found standing in the queue after 4 PM.
There was no report of violence from anywhere in areas where repoll was held, State Election Commission secretary Tamal Majumder said. He added that all observers, micro observers and poll personnel who were appointed for the repolled seats on the day of general election were re-deployed today.
The SEC chief today further said that all measures were taken for free and fair counting process on July 18. Counting of votes cast in the panchayat election would start at 8 AM and is expected to continue through the night. A total of 44 counting halls would be made operational across 35 locations of the state. Three separate counting halls would be used for counting votes cast in the by-election of three civic bodies – Udaipur Municipal Council, Sabroom Nagar Panchayat and Ranirbazaar Nagar Panchayat.
Asked about arrangement of security, Majumder said that all strong rooms were placed under tight security. BSF jawans are being used for ensuring proper security of the strong rooms as well.
Three tier security would be used for the counting halls tomorrow. Multi angle video recording with two static cameras monitoring the counting tables, one camera for each of RO table and general
surveillance inside and outside the counting hall would be pressed into service.
The final output of counting process is expected to arrive at least 24 hours after the counting process starts.
