Agartala, Sept 22 (TIWN) Yet another blow to Tripura’s main opposition Congress, more than 500 Congress workers and 22 important local leaders Sunday joined newly formed Tripura unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), headed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

TMC’s Tripura unit’s new chairman Ratan Chakraborty while addressing at a press conference in Agartala Sunday said : “Today over 500 Congress workers along with 22 local leaders joined TMC. More senior Congress leaders, members and supporters would soon join the party (TMC).”

Mr Chakraborty in presence of the newly joined leaders and workers (from Congress), said that the TMC would be the main opposition party replacing Congress to voted out the ruling Left Front from the power.

Now the Congress is the main opposition party in India’s lone Left ruled state Tripura with only ten members in the 60-member state assembly.

The Congress leaders Sunday joined TMC included Sadar district president Tapan Datta and pradesh Congress member Subrata Dey.

Ruling CPI-M’s youth wing DYFI’s (Democratic Youth Federation of India) Ramnagar unit vice-president Mohammad Salim has also joined the TMC.

Mr Chakraborty together with former Tripura Congress President Surajit Datta and former opposition leader Jawahar Saha, all former ministers, earlier this month joined TMC.

Ms Banerjee appointed Mr Chakraborty, Mr Datta and Saha as the chairman, president and vice-chairman of the Tripura unit of the TMC respectively.

The disgruntled leaders, who were against elevation of former Tripura chief minister and ex-state party chief Samir Ranjan Barman’s son Sudip Roy Burman first as Tripura Congress head and then as leader of opposition in the state assembly, claimed that the present leadership of the Congress helped a lot to re-install the Left Front into the power in Tripura.

The Congress leadership headed by Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl have earlier expelled all the party leaders who joined TMC claiming that “they are betrayers and become angry after losing the party posts.”
