AGARTALA, June 26 (TIWN): Where Border Management Secretary Susheel Kumar after arriving in the state on Friday said the by December next year, Tripura's 856-km border with Bangladesh would be completely fenced, now question arises on the age old disputes underway at Muhurichar which has blocked the fencing work. PWD Minister Badal Chowdhury’s comment erupted further controversy when he said that Union Home Ministry's Border Management Secretary Susheel Kumar’s arrival will not solve the age old dispute over the Muhurichar issue, because its matter of two countries. Talking to TIWN correspondent, PWD Minister Badal Chowdhury said that Muhirichar is an age old dispute between India and Bangladesh, it can be solved with the discussions, negotiation, understanding between the authorities of both the countries but Arrival of Border Management Secretary Susheel Kumar will not solve the Muhurichar issue, and it’s a matter of two countries.

Choudhury also alleged that the matter has become critical as the central govt. is not paying attention over this issue and as a result the areas without fencing are creating many unwanted events in border area.

Although Tripura has been various times attacked by insurgent groups like NLFT, also threatened by various rebellious groups and robbers but in many sensitive places like Muhurichar, fencing works couldn’t proceed due to disputes.PWD Minister Badal Choudhury while talking to TIWN agreed that it has really become an issue of concern as Belonia Border area is frequently being attacked by robbers, thieves and has become a corridor for smuggling; once the border fencing is done as per Modi Govt.’s wish,  then many Indian lands in Belonia which actually should come under India, have to be handed over to Bangladesh.“CPI-M Govt. supports Manmohon-Hasina deal, not the new demarcation done by the BJP govt. recently.

It is to be mentioned that Muhurichar has become resident for around 300 families. They are living there for more than 125 years, whether record says 125 Indian farmers are cultivating on those lands, since before 1971. Moreover, there are three cremation grounds of three different religions existing in the Muhurichar area for several decades. Since partition of India in 1947, the Muhuri river along Muhurichar was considered a natural boundary for both nations

Since India's independence in 1947 and Bangladesh formation in 1971, long standing dispute of Muhuri Char is still hanging in balance without any ray of hope in sight.

Susheel Kumar, who came here on Friday on a three-day visit to Tripura after meeting officials in Meghalaya and West Bengal, held a meeting with Tripura Chief Secretary Yashpal Singh, senior officials of the Border Security Force, District Magistrates and Collectors of different bordering districts besides senior state government officials.

By December next year, Tripura's 856-km border with Bangladesh would be completely fenced to check trans-border movement of terrorists, hostile elements, prevent infiltration and check border crimes, he said, however time will say how fencing is work carried out at Muhurichar.
