AGARTALA, July 19 (TIWN): A senior Tripura education department woman official was arrested for allegedly embezzling more than Rs.4 crore from a central government scheme, but interestingly scamster Ambalika Dutta managed to find an easy escape from the police custody as she was admitted to IGM hospital in the name of illness. She was supposed to be produced before the court on Saturday but she managed to stay in hospital safe despite the doctor prepared to discharge her, said police officer.Talking to senior police officer on Saturday evening in this regard, TIWN was informed that Ambalika who was arrested on July 14 managed to stay safe at hospital till today simply in the name of illness and stomach pains whereas the attending doctors had prepared on Saturday to release her.On Saturday morning at around 10 am Amabilika again reported the doctors that she is suffering from a severe stomach pain following which the doctors again had to admit her and prescribed medicines, said the police officer. He said, “Even today we are unable to produce her before the court and probably she will remain admit even tomorrow, though we are keeping eye on it; but we cannot get her produced before the court until the doctors release her.”The officer also said that Ambalika filed a bail petition before the High Court recently following which the HC would hear the bail plea onJuly 22. Ambalika Datta, education department deputy director and in-charge of Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), was arrested on July 14.

Since from the very beginning when Ambalika was arrested she apparently moved forward to find easy escape from the police custody. The police officer told TIWN that earlier she had a gynaecological problem and taking an advantage of this Ambalika managed to remain in hospital. The state government had lodged an FIR in the multi-crore scam against several officials.

According to the official, Education Department Additional Director Dilip Kumar Debbarma was suspended earlier from service for their reported involvement in the multi-crore scam. Both Datta and Debbarma were also involved in issuing an order to purchase books written by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and former Chief secretary Sanjay Kumar Panda, now the secretary of the union textiles ministry.

The order, which was issued without taking permission from the appropriate authority, had asked the district education department officials to purchase the two books out of the annual grant provided to 839 schools by RMSA during the 2013-14 fiscal.
