AGARTALA, July 15 (TIWN): Just after the reang refugees (also called ‘Brus’ )camping here in Tripura Kanchanpur bordering area under North district showed their reluctant attitude towards returning back to their home town, Tripura Government demanded the central government to announce attractive rehabilitation package for refugees ensuring security at their place of settlement.

Sarkar argued that there has been no positive outcome of the recent repatriation process jointly taken up by MHA and Mizoram Government and the problem continue as before.

Addressing his key note during the recent meeting with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at Guwahati Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said despite, state government has been constantly persuading Union Home Ministry for early repatriation of the migrants, the process has been very slow.

Only about 1, 030 families out of 7, 364 families were repatriated to Mizoram in six phases before the current repatriation process, Sarkar addressed the meeting.

Sarkar said, “Number of youths amongst the brus camping here in Tripura, are engaged to several anti-social activities.” Adding, he said that further these camps are also becoming soft recruitment target for NLFT.

This indeed is a matter of great concern to the state government, said Tripura CM.

It is well known that the influx of Bru families from Mizoram to Tripura started in October, 1997 due to serious ethnic strife in Mizoram.

Since then, the migrated families are straying in various relief camps of North Tripura district. The continuous presence of these migrants for over more than seventeen years has its own socio-economic and law and order implications.

It is worthy to mention here that after Dhamcharra Kaskau relief camp, the identification process at Hamsapara under North Tripura District was closed on July 4, after no turn out of Brus.

The next identification process had kicked off from July 13 at Kanchanpur Ashapara, said the official of North Tripura District. The official expressed, “We cannot say that the identification would be cancelled following ‘no turn out’ of refugees but it is assumed that the refugees are reluctant to return.”

The identification processes are being carried out by the officials of both the states prior to the repatriation of the bru refugees.

Prior to the repatriation of the reang refugees the identification process had began from June 2, but since then no refugees had turned out offering that they would not return until their demands are clarified by the Central government.

Asked about the reason the official said, “When the identification process had begin on June 2, the leaders of the bru refugees have asked the refugees not to turn up for identification unless their demands are met.”
