AGARTALA, July 9 (TIWN): Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh on July 11 would convene a meeting of Chief Ministers of all the eight Northeastern States of the India at Guwahati on July 11. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar would leave for the meeting on July 10 taking up the agenda of the insurgency, border management, Natural Calamity and other developmental works, said the top official. This meeting, chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, would be held at Assam Administrative Staff College on July 11 to discuss various issues, including strategy to deal with insurgents based in Myanmar. The meeting would also take stock of the security management here in all the northeastern states including Tripura and how to deal with emerging threats like increasing violence perpetrated by Northeast militants based in Myanmar, official said.Besides, the meeting is also expected to review the ongoing infrastructure projects of roads, bridges, railways, and other sorts of connectivity with the neighbouring country Bangladesh.According to the status report of the state government here at present at least 17 camps of the banned NLFT outfits are present in neighbouring country Bangladesh.

According to the sources, the meeting has come up just after the carrying out of a rare cross-border operation into Myanmar, to avenge the killing of 18 soldiers in Manipur this year.Minister Rajnath Singh during his visit here in Tripura this year, termed insurgency as the major problem that the Northeastern region has been facing.

However, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar in wake of the meeting has been preparing the agendas to be brought in discussion on July 1. It is worthy to mention here that the insurgency activities across the bordering areas of the state have always been a matter of concern for the state government.

Earlier Home Minister asked the militants to shun violence. Singh also said that the development of the North Eastern region cannot be brought until the insurgency gets destroyed.

Most of these hideouts were concentrated at Chittagong Hill Track (CHT) in the neighboring country Bangladesh. The insurgents were using Tripura-Mizoram-Bangladesh tri-junction as corridor. Security agencies including Assam Riffles and Tripura State Riffles (TSR) have been trying hard to stop infiltration of militants from across the border.

Besides, the meeting to be chaired by Singh on July 11 would also discuss issues pertaining to improved border management between these two nations – India and Bangladesh. A major share of Tripura’s woes emerges from its 856-kilometre international border with Bangladesh, which touches each of its four districts, being porous.

It is also worthy to mention here that despite Rajnath Singh during his visit to the state had sought decent solution to the problem of repatriation of over 31,000 displaced Brus who have taken shelter in Tripura for over 17 years, the refugees were recently found reluctant to go back until their rehabilitation package is cleared.

Recently during the identification process, no refugees who called themselves ‘Bru’ had turned out following which the repatriation is in a verge to be cancelled.

There are over 31,000 Brus belonging to 5286 families in six evacuee camps in Kanchanpur sub-division of North Tripura district.

They had fled their ancestral homes in Mizoram and have been staying here since October 1997. The Home Ministry has already released funds amounting to Rs 242.35 crore up to 2014-15 for maintenance of Bru migrants living in relief camps.
