South Tripura to get BG rail line by 2017, work underway in full swing at Agartala rail station

AGARTALA, July 7 (TIWN): Thousands of men and women gathered at many stations between Lumding in Assam and Agartala in Tripura as the last of the metre gauge trains chugged its way out, bidding them a final goodbye whereas hundreds of Agartala passengers eye at south to get linked with the BG rail line. The proposed Rs. 1,741 crore for Agartala-Sabroom railway lines is expected to be completed by 2017, said the official.Whereas if things fall in place, the ongoing work of BG conversion work from Lumding to Agartala via Badarpur would be completed by March 2016.The official said that the construction work for laying the broad gauge lines in currently underway in full swing with the labours and the concerned NFR workers actively engaged to the work despite the bad weathers.The official further said that, a preliminary trial run will be held followed by passengers train. There will be 10 railway stations at places including Sekerkot, Bisalgarh, Bisramganj, Udaipuir, Gorji, Santir Bazar, Belonia, Jolaibari, Monu, and sabroom between Agartala- Sabroom rail link. There will also be some station buildings and rest house in between the Agartala- Sabroom rail link.Sabroom would emerge as a gateway for trade in the South-East Asia. It is learnt that, funds have been sanctioned for the construction work long back.

According to the official source, by this Durga Puja the train service would be suspended again to kick off the work of laying BG lines in a full-fledged manner.

The 115 years old railway lines would be converted to broad gauge, bringing them in sync with those in the rest of the country. For this, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) stopped train services in Tripura and other north eastern states.

The ongoing project work has geared up with an aim to bring boon for the entire Northeast including the left-ruled Tripura. Emerging as a gateway for the trade in South East Asia the Agartala-Sabroom rail link has now come up in the rail map of the country. 

At the mean time the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), which is building rail infrastructure in the region, has targeted to connect all its eight state capitals by 2020.

In a move to ease congestion and to accommodate more number of trains, a new platform is undergoing construction at Agartala railway station. With this the number of platforms will help in managing the railway congestion in the railway station.

The 437-km long Lumding-Agartala metre gauge rail line, most part of which is in Assam and the remaining in Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur, would be converted into broad gauge in two phases.
