AGARTALA, July 6 (TIWN): The reang ‘Bru’ refugees camping here in Tripura’s North district are found reluctant to go back to hometown as their demands are not fulfilled yet by the Mizoram Government, they claimed. After Dhamcharra Kaskau relief camp’s identification process at Hamsapara under the North Tripura District was closed on July 4 after no turnout of Brus. The next identification process would kick off from July 13 at Kanchanpur Ashapara, said the official of North Tripura District. The official expressed, “We cannot say that the identification would be cancelled following no turn out of the refugees but it is assumed that the refugees are reluctant to return.”The identification processes are being carried out by the officials of both the states prior to the repatriation of the bru refugees.Only six people belonging to two families came forward at the Hamsapara camp to be identified on the first day, the official said here on Sunday talking to TIWN. He said that a section of refugees who turned out in the identification process, had informed that they would not go back to Mizoram as the government had not cleared the rehabilitation package. Repatriation process at Hamsapara camp, scheduled to commence from Monday, is not likely to be undertaken, Das said. He said, “Repatriation process would continue and identification work would be conducted in the next relief camp.” The next identification process would start from Kanchanpur Ashapara on July 13.

Asked about the reason the official said, “When the identification process had begin on June 2, the leaders of the bru refugees had asked the refugees not to turn up for identification unless their demands are met.”

As per earlier tripartite talks between Mizoram Government, Mizoram Bru Displaced People's Forum (MBDPF) and Tripura Government, identification of bonafide residents of Mizoram for repatriation started at the Kaskau camp from June 2 but not a single family turned up.

However, despite all out efforts, repartition of Bru refugees, sheltered in six relief camps in Kanchanpur subdivision, has been virtually derailed once again.

The preparations came after the Supreme Court instructed both the Centre and the Mizoram government to repatriate all Brus within six months.

After the talks on speeding up the process of repatriation of the Mizoram Bru refugees living in Tripura, Mizoram for the first time agreed to take back all the Bru displaced persons residing in Tripura since 1997.

Previous year around 300 refugees sheltered in Tripura since 1997; have returned to Mizoram whereas another large number of refugees who called themselves as ‘Bru’ refused to go back to Mizoram as their demands had not yet been fulfilled. They alleged that the Mizoram govt. had failed to fulfill their demands of separate autonomous body along with others.
