AGARTALA, January 26 (TIWN): Alongwith the rest of the nation, the spirit of republic day was also observed in this state with patriotic songs playing at every other nook and corner, flying tri color and an environment of holiday apart from couple of government programmes. The patriotic instinct and fervor of people seem to arouse on a definite occasion only such as republic day and the other days of the year go on either by corrupt practices by a section of people , either in power or off the power. Our correspondent has also spoken to state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Sudhindra Dasgupta where the Sudhindra Dasgupta has remarked as “The constitution is the highest Act of the nation and it came in force on this very day of 1950 and the same protects the democratic right and ensures justice and prevents oppression on citizens”.

Republic Day honors the date on which the Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India. The Constitution was passed by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949 but was adopted on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country's transition toward becoming an independent republic. 26 January was selected for this purpose because it was this day in 1930 when the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress. On 28 August 1947, the Drafting Committee was appointed to draft a permanent constitution, with Dr.B. R. Ambedkar as chairman. While India's Independence Day celebrates its freedom from British Rule, the Republic Day celebrates of coming into force of its constitution.

On the occasion of Republic Day, TIWN has spoken to all the party Chairman, Presidents and leaders of the major political parties of the state. “Constitutional rights and privileges are yet to be fulfilled and we have taken a pledge to uphold the same”, said Chairman of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Ratan Chakraborty. During the talk the Chairman signified the issues of unemployment and poverty in the state. On being asked what his party is doing amidst all the corruption incidences and likes in the state, he said: “Yes! We have not been able to do anything strongly but in segregated ways we are alerting the people and making awareness through demonstration, party meeting and encircling (Gherao) different Police Stations like Kamalpur, Bisalgarh etc.”

BJP leader Sudhindra Dasgupta too has insisted on the issues of unemployment and crimes against women. “Freedom of speech, right of equality irrespective class and creed and right of livelihood should be ensured but the state government has been nurturing their party only and people are getting deprived”, Mr. Dasgupta added. He has disclosed today that number of Congress and CPI (M) leaders is in contact with the BJP leadership. The state BJP head has urged all the people of the state to unify to put an end to the problems of their lives. “We did not expect this sort of overwhelming response from the people of Tripura to join the BJP and more and more people are coming”, further added the BJP chief.

India possesses world’s largest written constitution. A draft constitution was prepared by the committee and submitted to the Assembly on 4 November 1947. The Assembly met, in sessions open to public, for 166 days, spread over a period of 2 years, 11 months and 18 days before adopting the Constitution. After many deliberations and some modifications, the 308 members of the Assembly signed two hand-written copies of the document (one each in Hindi and English) on 24 January 1950. Two days later, it came into effect throughout the nation.

On our last note, we talked to the State Secretary of Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI) Secretary Bijan Dhar to have his thoughts on the national day.  “The true sense of the republic day is eroding day by day”, was the first assertion of Bijan Dhar. He has accused the ruling class of destroying the basis, fabric and sense of the republic government. “BJP led government is failed in case of social, economic and other spheres”, he said. Capitalising on his own remarks, when he was questioned that whether the state’s ruling government is playing with the trust of the people amidst multiple corruption, he stated: “Not all the disclosures made by the opposition are true though where Prima Facie evidences are got, the government takes action and no such steps and works are done by the government where the main base of constitution and national integrity are spoilt unlike other communal parties.”

While replying to the question of party’s dismal position in centre and subsequently state (amidst Modi wave) the party leader said, “Yes apparently is seems that the left parties are in a low position at present and electorally its true too.” He further accepted the fact the capacity of left parties to intervene into national politics is not strong enough and the same would have to be achieved through struggle.
