AGARTALA, Sep 28 (TIWN): Banning all political rallies, West Tripura DM had imposed Section 144 on September 21st up to November 4. Alleging the move is misuse of the CrPC to curb people’s freedom of speech and to suppress the opposition voices, Advocate Samarjit Bhattacharjee, who is also a Human Rights activist filed a petition in the High Court today. Lawyer Purushottom Roy Barman was present on behalf of the petitioner. The Advocate General had argued against the legal ground’s validity in the petition. The High Court has accepted the plea and issued a notice to the State Govt. Court has sought replies by October 5, which is the next date of hearing.

After the hearing, talking to the media, the petitioner's Advocate team said, “The DM has imposed 144 for 7 weeks. Advocate General SS Dey argued heavily over the petition calling it baseless, whereas Advocate Purushottom Roy Barman has stated that the Section 144 is a direct attack on Democracy. High Court has issued notice to the Govt”.
