AGARTALA, May 28 (TIWN): As Jamai Shasthi has fallen on month’s ending, businessmen have alleged losses.

Talking to the buyers, they also said that due to month’s ending the markets are in losses and also due to lockdown, people’s hands are dry.

Amid lockdown, ahead of Jamai Shashthi, Hilsa fish prices have shot up to Rs. 1600 to Rs. 2000. 

Jamai Shashthi to be celebrated on May 28 and like every year families in Bengali community are busy to purchase delicious food making items, raw items for son-in-laws. Prices of the hugely popular and delightfully tasty fish Hilsa have skyrocketed in Agartala ahead of the Jamai Shasthi which will be celebrated on Thursday.

At Battala Bazaar, the small Hilsas are available with 850 to 1000 rupees whereas the big fishes costs 1400 to 1600 per kilo and in few places Rs. 2000.

For many Bengali people Hilsa, a species of fish in the herring family, is a "must eat" fish on traditional occasions.

Skyrocketing price of commodities in the State ahead of Jamai Shasthi  has hit the pocket of people miserably.

On the occasion of Jamai Shasthi celebration, the delicious Hilsa fish is a traditional item on the menu of New Year feast. But due to the soaring price of Hilsa, it is gradually vanishing from the menu of the fixed income people.

Eating fish with rice is the followed as tradition in most of the Bengali families. But the skyrocketing price has become headache for the middle class and poor families.

Amid soaring prices many were seen in the city's markets to, people were seen buying Hilsa fish form the market.
