AGARTALA, May 27 (TIWN): Incessant raining, stormy weather, predicted by IMD has started massive damages in Tripura along with other Northeastern states. In various parts of the capital city Agartala have faced challenges, as trees collapsing have damaged electrical posts, disruption, power connectivity. Various shops and houses were damaged and the rains are continuing, said local reports. Days after the torrential rainfall and widespread destruction caused by Super Cyclone Amphan over east and northeast India, the entire region is once again set to be on the receiving end of heavy rain and inundation threat for the week to come. Accordingly, red alerts have been placed over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh between May 26-28, while a severe flood alert has been issued across two Assamese districts. Tripura too came under the affects.

Forecasts suggest that strong, hot and humid southerly winds from the Bay of Bengal are set to bring heavy rains over northeast India. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), extremely heavy downpour is possible over isolated areas of Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday, while Assam and Meghalaya shall experience the same over the next five days.

As the rivers in northeast are in spate and the forecasts warn of more rains, the Central Water Commission (CWC), as of Tuesday evening, has issued a ‘severe’-level flood alert for the Brahmaputra river in Jorhat and Sonitpur districts of Assam. Further, the districts of Barpeta, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Nalbari, and Baksa are displaying ‘above normal’-level flood situations.
