AGARTALA, Nov 8 (TIWN): The onion is fast moving out of the kitchen in past couple of weeks. The price of onion in the city vegetable markets has shot up to Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg, the highest in the season. A retailer in the city told media that the prices have jumped probably due to shortage of stock. “There is no rule for selling the price in retail. The retailers may charge anything from Rs 80 to Rs 100,” a customer added, whereas another customer supported the sellers saying, “What is their fault if import is at loss. Many shop-keepers are buying items in debts. Not only onion, each and every commodity price at hike. If Govt can’t monitor the market and more other issues which are leading market prices, no relief for the customers”.With the rate being Rs 60 per kg in vegetable markets, street vendors have hiked it to Rs 100 per kg. A vendor at Gol Bazar said, “The high price has started having an impact on the demand. We witnessed less demand on Tuesday.”

The onion price in the city vegetable markets shot up to Rs 80 per kg on Friday, the highest ever this year. The rates have been on an upswing since August 26.

However, in sharp contrast to this, onion prices remained high this year with the commodity selling for Rs 25 to 50 in last few months. Meanwhile in the last few days, onion prices as other vegetables, have surged sharply presently selling at Rs 80 to 90 a kg in retail outlets in state capital Agartala. The prices are also high in other cities as well.

The seller claimed that the onion was selling at Rs 70 per kg in wholesale market on Thursday and added that situation would be the same unless supplies improve drastically in near future.

In the light of public concern over high prices of onions in the market, the Ministry of Agriculture today decided to allow relaxation from the condition of fumigation and endorsement on PSC as per the Plant Quarantine Order, 2003, for onion imports up to November 30.

The Agriculture Ministry said that conditions to be met are that such consignments of imported onions, which arrive at Indian port without fumigation and endorsement to that effect on the PSC, would be fumigated in India by the importer through an accredited treatment provider. The consignment would be inspected thoroughly by quarantine officials and released only if found free from pests and diseases of concern to India.
