AGARTALA, Nov 7 (TIWN): The government is learnt to have cleared the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation to appoint Justice A.A. Kureshi as the Chief Justice of Tripura, The Hindu reported.

Ending months of standoff, the name of Justice Akil Kureshi of the Bombay High Court is learnt to have been cleared for elevation as the chief justice of the Tripura High Court, government sources said on Thursday.

The file has been cleared by the government and is now pending before the President for signing the warrant of appointment, they said.

The Supreme Court collegium had earlier recommended him to head the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Following reservations raised by the government, the collegium modified its recommendation and proposed his name as the Tripura High Court chief justice. PTI NAB SMN SMN

Today according to IANS news, the Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned the matter related to the elevation of Justice Akil Kureshi, who is currently serving as a Judge of the Bombay High Court, for November 13.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said that the matter will be heard on November 13 after the Centre's counsel told the court that he was awaiting signatures on the Collegium recommendation to appoint Justice Kureshi as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court.

Gujarat High Court Advocates Association (GHCAA) had moved the apex court taking objection to the Centre's reluctance to appoint Justice Kureshi as the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court.

However, according to Hindu news media, Centre has cleared justice Khureshi’s appointment as Tripura Chief Justice.
