Agartala, September 8 (TIWN):Tripura State Pollution Control Board on Monday conducted the anti polythene bag raid in Marajganj Bazar. Today under the leadership of Dr.Das the Board raided at Golbazar shops to seize polythene bags.
State Pollution Control Boards anti- polythene bag mission began today, Dr. Das had headed the mission. The Board today reached Golbazar and seized 20-25kg of polythene bags. Though no large quantity has been found yet today, but mission will continue in the next coming days- says Mission Officer Dr.Das. Next raid will start at Battala Bazar, Lake Chowhumani Bazar etc.
It is to be mentioned that though the Government puts up a ban on the use of polythene bags, still the vegetable vendors and the owners of the designer shops sells the materials in polythene bags of less than 55 microns without any hesitation or fear. The ban worked only for few days. The used bags eventually found their ways into drains, canals, rivers, parks and streets harming the environment .Environment experts say the worst thing about polythene is that it is non-biodegradable and its decomposition takes at least 400 years. . It may be mentioned here that the decision to impose the ban was made under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and the Plastics Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011. The result will penalty of Rs 100 to Rs 1000 fixed.
