AGARTALA, September 3 (TIWN): Some vested interest groups are acting to stop generic medicines from gaining ground in Tripura, Health and Family Welfare minister Badal Choudhury said. Speaking in response to a calling attention notice moved by Chief Whip of the assembly Samir Deb Sarkar and MLA Biswabandhu Sen, health minister Choudhury today said that a section of vested interest groups are trying hard to stop generic drugs from gaining ground in the state. He said that a large section of pharmaceutical drug suppliers are trying to create disillusionment among generic drugs owing to which proper procurement is becoming tough as well. The government decided to promote generic drugs in the state and the effort will continue unabated, the minister added.
Health minister Choudhury today flayed doctors and said that a section of doctors are trying to promote proprietary drugs to satisfy vested interests. He said that totally stopping proprietary drugs in the state wouldn’t be a timely decision at the moment.
The government would, however, continue with efforts to popularize generic medicines in the days ahead, the minister said. In response to a point of clarification moved by chief whip Samir Deb Sarkar, the health minister said that prices of generic drugs are nearly 1/4th of the standard proprietary drugs in many cases and their quality was equally good.
Tamil Nadu was the first state of the country to have introduced generic medicines way back in 1994.
