AGARTALA, September 1 (TIWN): Chief Minister Manik Sarkar today said that the state government didn’t have any plans of constituting a separate state human rights commission for Tripura. The state had very low rate of incidences of human rights violation, he said adding that district and sessions judge courts in North, West and South Tripura districts were entrusted with charges of handling human rights violations within concerned jurisdictions.Replying to a Calling Attention Notice moved by MLA Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl, Chief Minister and Home Minister in-charge Manik Sarkar said that Tripura had almost no incidents of human rights violation in the past several years. “We don’t need to constitute a separate human rights commission as such”, he said.

The Chief Minister further said that a proposal was earlier moved from the state government for trying all cases of human rights violation under the authority of Assam Human Rights Commission. “The Assam Human Rights Commission agreed to the proposition but the Government of Assam failed to take any effective steps” the Chief Minister claimed.

He further said that the state government felt it was unable to pay the necessary perks and bear other expenses for facilities needed to hire a retired Chief Justice of a High Court or a retired judge of the Supreme Court of India to handle operations of the state state human rights commission proposed for Tripura.

Tripura registered a negative trend in upholding human rights with numerous incidents of violation. A recent incident where a pregnant lady was tortured inside a party office of the ruling CPI (M) in Belonia sub-division of South Tripura district still remains unsolved. Four leaders of the CPI (M) party were arrested after preliminary investigation on the incident that led to miscarriage of the lady. Assam, Manipur and Sikkim have their own human rights commissions in India’s northeast.
